Quick Reference

A clinical sign used in the diagnosis of knee injuries. The patient lies in a relaxed position with the knee extended and tenses the quadriceps muscle as the examiner presses the patella into the trochlea. Pain indicates a patellar dysfunction; retropatellar pain indicates chondromalacia patellae, but the sign is not very sensitive.
