Theoretical physics up to approximately the end of the 19th century, before the concepts of quantum theory (1900) and special relativity (1905). Classical physics relied largely on Newtonian mechanics and James Clerk Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism. It may still be applied with high precision to large-scale phenomena.
