An order of fungi that form perithecioid (see perithecium) ascocarps which may be superficial or immersed in a fleshy stroma; the ascospores are long and narrow. There are many genera. Some species are parasitic on grasses, sometimes causing important plant diseases; some are parasitic on insects or on other fungi.
