Pope from 1592. It was his policy to secure the representation of all the conflicting influences in the curia, and especially to limit that of Spain. He supported the Catholic League against Henry of Navarre, but also negotiated with him, so that in 1595 Henry became a RC. Clement issued new editions of the Vulgate, Missal, and Breviary.
