British Baptist minister. He became President of the Baptist Union in 1888 and from 1905 to 1911 he was President of the World Baptist Alliance. He led the movement for ‘passive resistance’ to A. J. Balfour's Education Act of 1902, which he held to be injurious to Nonconformist interests.
