An international programme coordinating studies of natural climate variability on scales of 1–100 years and estimation of climatic change through the increase in greenhouse gases. Four main fields are covered: El Niño Southern Oscillation; variability of monsoon regimes; variability of the thermohaline circulation; and global climate and sea-level change.
