A method of medical practice that concentrates on opportunistic case-finding, presymptomatic screening, health risk appraisal, and strategic and tactical interventions, such as immunization programs, health-promotion strategies such as smoking cessation programs and dietary and exercise regimens, all aimed at promoting good health and preventing disease, and on detecting and correcting departures from good health before these cause irreversible harm. It may be combined with a health promotion program at the community level. See Preventive Services Task Force.
