closed union

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A trade union with a narrowly defined job territory, which restricts its membership to workers within a particular enterprise, industry, or occupation. In the UK, for example, the National Association of Head Teachers is a closed union in two senses. It restricts its membership to the field of education and, within that field, confines itself to representing head teachers and their deputies. Another form of closed union is an enterprise union; that is, one that restricts its membership to workers in a single employing organization. [See open union.]
