The Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System instrument initially carried on the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (1997) and currently active on the Terra satellite. A broad-band scanning radiometer designed to monitor the radiation flux throughout the depth of the atmosphere. It primarily provides data about the influence of clouds on the radiation budget. (Approximately 8 per cent of incoming radiation cannot be accounted for in current atmospheric models.) The instrument is scheduled to be carried by five separate satellite missions to provide a 15-year database.
