cluster sample

Quick Reference

A probability sample used when there is no suitable sampling frame of the population but a sampling frame for subgroups is available. Thus, to survey hospital patients throughout an entire country, an investigator may be able to select a random sample of hospitals from a list of all hospitals in the country and could then apply a questionnaire to all patients in the selected hospitals. See also multistage cluster sampling, random digit dialling, simple random sample, stratified random sample.
