Quick Reference
The southern region of Vietnam, centred on the Mekong delta. It was so called to distinguish it from Cochin in India. The home of people akin to the Khmers, it was not fully absorbed by the Vietnamese until the 18th century. It was the base from which Gia-Long, as emperor of Annam, unified Vietnam in 1802.
