Apache Indian chief. Noted for his courage and military prowess, he gave his word in 1860 that he would not molest US mail riders passing through his Arizona territory in spite of war. In 1872 he made a peace treaty with the US government. He maintained both agreements, despite hostile acts from White people and Native Americans.
