Quick Reference

Legislation passed by the British Parliament as a punishment for the Boston Tea Party. They closed the port of Boston pending compensation, amended Massachusetts's charter, allowed trials to be transferred to other colonies, and troops to be quartered at Boston's expense. Though Lord North's aim was to isolate Massachusetts, the “Intolerable Acts”, as they became known, stiffened American resistance and precipitated the Continental Congress.
