(Giordano: Andrea Chénier). Sop. Daughter of the Contessa. She is secretly loved by her mother's servant, Gérard, a leading Revolutionary. She falls in love with the poet Andrea Chénier, and asks him for protection. He wounds Gérard and is arrested and tried as a Counter‐Revolutionary. He is sentenced to death. As he is held in prison awaiting execution, Maddalena pleads with Gérard to save him—she will even give herself to Gérard in return. He is unable to intervene, but helps Maddalena enter the prison and allows her to take the place of a condemned female prisoner so that she can die together with Chénier.
