Quick Reference

(1697–1759) Coke’s large-scale book buying on the Grand Tour (1712–18) led to the creation of an exceptional library that absorbed and enhanced the legal and literary collections of his ancestor, Sir Edward Coke (1552–1634). Still largely intact at Holkham Hall, Norfolk, the collection embodies the classicizing preoccupations of an early 18th-century virtuoso.
