cold-ion detector

Quick Reference

A scientific instrument that detects ions. Electronic sparks that can damage a spacecraft's electronic systems are generated by the Sun's hot plasma as the spacecraft passes through the Earth's radiation. To research the phenomenon, the Mullard Space Science Laboratory built a cold-ion detector for the European Space Agency's Space Technology Research Vehicle STRV-1a, launched in 1994 into geostationary orbit.
