Pain induced by immersing a hand and forearm in circulating ice water close to freezing point, used in experimental studies of pain because it causes no permanent tissue damage. Pain begins to mount immediately and typically becomes unbearable after approximately 40 seconds. See also algesimeter, dolorimeter, hidden observer, ischaemic pain.
