Quick Reference

A term sometimes used as a synonym for Cool art and sometimes applied more specifically to works that rely on mathematical systems and formulae for either their conception or their development. It was in the latter sense that the term was used by the Swiss painter Karl Gerstner (1930– ) in his book Kalte Kunst (1954). A follower of Max Bill, Gerstner helped (like Richard Lohse) to extend Bill's idea of mathematical programming into the realm of colour.
