A large Roman amphitheatre, the term is particularly associated with the ‘Colosseum’ in Rome, the Amphiteatrum Flavium begun by Vespasian between ad 70 and 76 and dedicated by Titus in ad 80. The Colosseum has long been acknowledged as one of the major sights of Rome and was frequently depicted by artists, particularly in the 18th and early 19th centuries. See amphitheatre.
