A major ligament that crosses either the medial aspect of a joint (medial collateral ligament) or lateral aspect. Collateral ligaments prevent excessive lateral motion at the knee and elbow. The medial collateral and lateral collateral ligaments of the knee are also known as the tibial and fibular collateral ligaments respectively.
