The elimination of divergent x-rays by using a metal tube, cone, or diaphragm (collimator) to produce a narrow beam directed specifically at the radiograph. Collimation gives the final shape and size of the x-ray beam. Legally in the UK the beam must be no more than 6cm in diameter.
