English land-scape-architect. From 1922 until 1939 she specialized in private gardens, but after the 1939–45 war made her reputation with landscape designs for power stations, reservoirs, universities, hospitals, factories, and mineral workings. From 1962 she worked on a project at Gale Common, Eggborough, Yorks., using waste from coal-fired power stations to form a pleasant hilly area. She designed a series of ‘ecological environments’ for several sites, including Rugeley Power Station, Staffs. (1962). Her book, Land and Landscape (1948) emphasized her view that ecological and conservation factors were essential to design.
