(1919–2007). English architectural historian. His meticulous attention to documentary research, rather than a reliance on stylistic attributions, transformed British architectural history. His Biographical Dictionary of English Architects 1660–1840 (1954), much enlarged as Biographical Dictionary of British Architects 1600–1840 (1978 and 1995), is the major standard work on British architects of the period. He was general editor and part-author of the History of the King's Works (1963–82).
