(Strauss: Ariadne auf Naxos). A troupe of comedians, hired by one of the richest men in Vienna to entertain his guests. They are led by Zerbinetta. Her male colleagues are Harlequin (bar.), Brighella (ten.), Truffaldino (bass), and Scaramuccio (ten.). The men were created (1912 vers.) by (respectively) Albin Swoboda, Franz Schwerdt, Reinhold Fritz, and Georg Meader; and (1916 vers.) by (respectively) Herr Neuber, Adolph Nemeth, Julius Betetto, and Hermann Gallos.
