A body appointed by the Home Secretary under the Race Relations Act 1976 with the general function of working towards the elimination of race discrimination by promoting equality of opportunity and good relations between different racial groups. Since 1 October 2007 the functions of the CRE have been integrated into the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
