Historian, daughter of the Byzantine emperor Alexius Comnenus. She nurtured ambitions that her husband would usurp her brother as emperor but when she was widowed in 1137, she retired to a monastery. She wrote the Alexiad, a history in 15 books which was largely an account of the First Crusade and panegyric of her father's life.
