State-run Spanish dance company which grew out of the company founded by Victor Ullate in 1979; previously known as Ballet Nacional Clásico and Ballet del Teatro Lírico Nacional. In 1990, when the company was reorganized and the current name adopted, Nacho Duato was appointed artistic director. Duato, a prolific choreographer fusing modern and classical idioms, lent the company a unique style and repertory until he left in 2010. Since 1992 it has toured internationally.
