Legislation governing the activities of companies. In the UK, the first Companies Act was passed in 1844; the current comprehensive legislation is contained in the 1985 Companies Act. The Companies Act 1989 incorporated various EC directives into UK law. A new Companies Act, which will replace almost all the previous legislation, received the Royal Assent in 2006; most of its provisions will come into force from October 2008.
