A union established and funded by an employer in order to pre-empt unionization by an external and independent trade union. Staff associations are sometimes accused of being company unions as there may be a question mark over their degree of independence from management. Company unions can be distinguished from enterprise unions, which are fully independent but which confine their membership to employees of a particular company.
