Quick Reference

A reference spectrum containing lines of accurately known wavelengths which can be used to calibrate astronomical spectra. A comparison spectrum of emission lines is usually produced in an arc-lamp attached to the spectrograph, and is recorded immediately before or after the spectrum of the object under study. Alternatively, absorption lines can be superimposed on the spectrum during the exposure using an iodine cell.
