Quick Reference

A variable describing the breakdown of some quantity into components that sum to the whole. An example is the outcome of the vote in a general election: in each constituency the separate votes for the competing parties sum to 100% of the votes cast. The composition varies from constituency to constituency. When the composition has just three parts a ternary diagram provides an appropriate display.
