A mixture of decaying organic matter, such as vegetation and manure, that is used as a fertilizer. The organic material is decomposed by aerobic saprotrophic organisms, mostly fungi and bacteria. Some decomposition is also carried out by detritivores. Compost is used mainly on a domestic scale.
