In the late 1970s the National Science Foundation saw that the ARPANET was having a major impact on computing and decided to set up a network known as the Computer Science Net for academics. This supported dial-up access and had connections to the ARPANET. It was one of the precursors of the Internet and was finally merged with BITNET and administered by CREN. It is often abbreviated to CSNET.
