Quick Reference

(1952– )

US tennis player.

Connors's first major title was the 1973 Wimbledon doubles championship, which he won with the Romanian player, Ilie Nastase (1946– ). The following year, Connors defeated the Australian Ken Rosewall (1934– ) in the finals of both the Wimbledon and US Open championships, establishing himself as one of the world's top players. His fast deep serves and aggressive groundstrokes, especially a powerful backhand, helped him win the US title again in 1976, 1978, 1982, and 1983. Moreover, after eight years of trying, he again won the coveted Wimbledon crown in 1982 by defeating John McEnroe in the final. Among over one hundred singles titles, he can include the 1974 Australian championship, the 1978 Masters tournament, and the WCT finals of 1977 and 1980.
