Epic poem in 11 books of conventional heroic couplets, by Timothy Dwight, published in 1785. Written between 1771 and 1773, the work is claimed by the author to be “the first epic poem to have appeared in America.” Shuttling with sonorous declamation between Canaan and Connecticut, it is an allegory in which Joshua's conquest of Canaan suggests the struggle under Washington.
