(1810–58), Philadelphia journalist and dramatist, author of such tragedies as Conrad, King of Naples (1832) and Jack Cade (1835). He chaired the prize committee (1843) which awarded $100 to Poe's The Gold-Bug as the best story sent to Dollar Magazine. He was mayor of Philadelphia (1854–56).
