The postulate, based on Newton's first law, that a rotating body will continue to turn about its axis of rotation with constant angular momentum unless an extended couple or eccentric force is exerted on it. Consequently, given that the angular momentum is constant, the moment of inertia and angular velocity are inversely proportional. If a spinning person, therefore, changes his or her moment of inertia by changing body shape, the rate of rotation will also change.
