A meeting, often a committee, of a group of experts whose aim is to review all available evidence on an issue or problem of concern, for instance the most effective way to treat cancers of specific site and type, and, using consensus development, to reach agreement that can be set out in a formal statement such as a screening or a treatment protocol. The method is used frequently in the United Kingdom and the European Union and by the US National Institutes of Health.
