From a functionalist perspective on society, the persuasive role played by social communication and the mass media in developing a social consensus, correlating the component parts of society. A key social function (as distinct from personal function) of such communication. For Lasswell in 1948 this was one of the three key functions of social communication (the others being the surveillance function and the socialization function). See also media functions.
