(in family law) The opportunity for a child to communicate with a person with whom that child is not resident. The degree of contact may range from a telephone call to a long stay or even a visit abroad, and the court may formalize such arrangements by making a contact order (see section 8 orders). The question of contact after a child has been adopted is becoming a contentious issue. See also care contact order.
