contact activation pathway

Quick Reference

The process in which blood clotting is activated by exposure of platelets to collagen to which they bind via the Gp Ia/IIa receptor. Platelet adhesion is strengthened further by recruitment of von Willebrand factor (vWF) and triggers release of platelet granule contents which also play a part in initiating the complex cascade of events that culminate in cleavage of factor I to form fibrin. See tissue factor (tissue factor pathway) (formerly the ‘extrinsic pathway’).
