Quick Reference

A family of GPI-anchored membrane-associated proteins that mediate cell surface interactions during development of the nervous system. Contactin-1 (CNTN1, glycoprotein gp135, 1018 aa) is a ligand for notch-1 and defects in CNTN1 cause Compton–North congenital myopathy. Contactin-2 (axonin-1, transient axonal glycoprotein 1, tag-1, tax-1, 1040 aa) may be important for initial growth and guidance of axons. Contactin-3 (brain-derived immunoglobulin superfamily protein-1, BIG-1, Plasmacytoma-associated neuronal glycoprotein, 1028 aa), contactin-4 (BIG-2), contactin-5 (neural recognition molecule NB-2, 1100 aa) and contactin-6 neural recognition molecule NB-3, 1028 aa) are thought to have similar roles.
