A probe monitoring pulsars and other bright X-ray stars. A collaborative effort between NASA and the UK's Science and Engineering Research Council, it was launched in August 1972 and operated until February 1981. The main body measured 3 × 2 m, and the observatory consisted of an ultraviolet telescope from Princeton University, New Jersey, and four X-ray detectors that primarily took background measurements for an X-ray astronomy experiment developed by the Mullard Space Science Laboratory of University College London, England.
