A licensing system developed by Richard Stallman which allows users to modify the source code of a system provided they grant the same rights to those they pass the system on to. Copyleft is one of the basic tenets of the open source movement. It is derived from the word ‘copyright’, the use of ‘left’ differentiating it from that restrictive form of licensing.
