The demarcation of an area by police for the purpose of investigating terrorist offences by use of tape or other means under powers given by s 33 of the Terrorism Act 2000. Normally the authority to do so must be given by a police officer of at least the rank of superintendent but in an emergency any officer may authorize the cordon pending the authority of a superintendent.
