This procedure was extensively used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in attempts to control dangerous epidemics, such as the global pandemic of influenza in 1919. Its failure in that instance contributed to its fall from favor and replacement by more rigorous containment methods based on better understanding of the epidemiology and characteristics of the epidemic agent, host, and environment.
