Quick Reference

A method by which a signal of known form may be extracted from a noisy background. It is useful where the form of the signal is known, as in a line in a spectrum or stellar image, and the best estimates of the position and strength of the feature are required. It is also used to measure the arrival times of pulses from pulsars; a template of the average pulse profile is correlated with the input waveform to find the best-fit arrival time.
