An amateur yachtsman who sailed his own yacht without a professional skipper. It is a mid-19th-century American term for a rich amateur sportsman, and spread to Britain mainly in its yachting connotation. Some yacht clubs used it when they were formed, i.e. Royal Corinthian Yacht Club.
