French dramatist, best known as the creator of French classical tragedy. He exerted a powerful influence on the English dramatists of the Restoration, particularly on Dryden, and on neo‐classical theory in general. His most important works are Le Cid (1637), Horace (1640), and Polyeucte (1643).
