correctional services

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The services provided by law-enforcement agencies that have several interfaces with health services, e.g., in relation to domestic violence, child abuse, illicit drug use by prison inmates, HIV/AIDS, and other sexually transmitted diseases that are a high risk for inmates. The word “correctional” implies that the services aspire to correct or control the cause or reason the law was violated, but the reality often falls short of this aspiration, e.g., because the service is understaffed with qualified personnel and/or overwhelmed by numbers needing the expert attention required to rehabilitate and prevent recidivism.

Subjects: Public Health and Epidemiology.
